The Thornborough Cursus Restoration Campaign

Thornborough Henges is the name given to a massive ancient site, one that includes three of the largest henges in Britain, as well as burial sites, and other ancient monuments including a massive ancient processional way called the Thornborough Cursus, this was almost a mile in length.

The cursus is Thornborough's oldest and largest major monument, it was almost a mile long.

Unfortunately, in the past around half of the Thornborough Cursus was quarried, and part of this was turned into a now closed landfill site.

It is our aim to restore this section of the Thornborough Cursus:

  • The land area of the cursus restored to its pre-quarried levels.
  • That land turned into common land, for all to use.
  • The cursus marked in some way so that visitors can appreciate the cursus.
  • Create a public footpath from West Tanfield to the Central Henge via the Cursus.

Our project is in the very early phase, we are looking for volunteers to help us raise funds and engineer a feasibility study so that a more detailed and costed plan can be created. We believe that ultimately this will be quite a large project, which will benefit both the local community and the wider public.
