Maybe the only thing that will save Thornborough is massive public pressure. In order for that to happen all of us will have to make sure we help to spread the word - the vast majority of people in Britain don't know what a henge is never mind those at Thornborough.

Due to this lack of knowledge, it is doubly important that all of us make sure that as many people as possible are made aware of this fascinating and important piece of heritage that is under threat.

You can help make this happen, by lobbying media outlets you can help get the message to significant numbers of people.

Also, don't forget the power of personal contact. By leafleting and collecting petition signatures you can spread the word extremely effectively.

Lobbying the press

It is very important that the press, either regionally or nationally, realise that there is very great public interest in Thornborough, and that the national debate on Thornborough needs to happen before it is too late.

We suggest you choose a national paper that you read and write them (1) to bring to the attention of the readership the issue of Thornborough and as why such an important subject is not getting wider coverage, and (2) regularly write reminders and updates hoping to start a dialogue with other letter writers.

Of course more than one paper can be written to, and other approaches can be made, including writing to all newspapers. The key thing is for editors to know that their readership is concerned.

It is often difficult to find reasons to write letters to the press, keeping an eye out for articles relating to other heritage sites can often suggest new themes for letters - comparing the treatment of Stonehenge to Thornborough is currently topical as is the impact of reduced funding for English Heritage.

Remember, keep plugging at it, it is better to send a single letter every week than to send a deluge to all press one week then forget about it - the pressure needs to be constant.

Online Lobbying

One of the most effective ways of spreading the message is through the Internet:

Asking members of online forums to sign the Thornborough Petition.

Ask websites to include a link to our campaign pages.

Suggest articles for online heritage and news sites.

Make sure you regularly bring up Thornborough when participating in online forums and chat rooms.

Leafletting and Petitioning

Why not print out a campaign poster to put up at your local library or shop?

Why not print out some leaflets (mono or colour) to hand out to people at museums and other places where people likely to be interested gather?

Why not print out a petition and get your family, friends and others to sign it?

Television and Radio

Thanks to programmes such as Time Flyers, the BBC has good quality air photography of Thornborough yet the subject has been all but ignored by the news, local interest and current issues programmes.

There's a wide variety of ways you can lobby the media in order to help raise Thornborough to the wider public.

The BBC alone runs at least 20 regular programmes on TV and Radio that could well be interested in covering Thornborough - they just need to be reminded about Thornborough often enough.

Why not contact a current affairs or local interest programme and suggest they cover Thornborough and the Ladybridge application?
